The notebook.

Where the engineers and researchers at OneCeylon write about what they are making. No hot takes, no roadmaps — just the work, and what we learned doing it.

Three months in, the island noticed

On Friday morning at the Taj Samudra, Sri Lanka Tourism named OneCeylon a co-winner of Best Customer-Centric Solution in its Tourism Start-Up Competition 2026. It is the first award we have ever won. The product it recognises is about three months old.

Every post in this notebook so far has been about something that broke. A rate limiter that punished the wrong people. A Send button that worked while the Enter key quietly didn't. Push notifications that nobody ever received. We write those up on purpose, because that is where the real work lives.

This one is different. Nothing broke. Something went right, and we would like to tell you how it happened, because the story is less about a trophy and more about the three months that led to it.

A Friday at the Taj Samudra

Every year on World Tourism Day, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority holds a national celebration. This year it fell on Friday, 25 September, at the Taj Samudra in Colombo, and the global theme could hardly have been closer to home for us: Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.

Alongside the speeches and panels, SLTDA ran a Tourism Start-Up Competition with one hard rule: AI had to be at the core of the solution, not bolted on. Teams entered in two categories, tertiary and commercial. We entered commercial, which meant standing next to companies with real customers, real revenue and, in most cases, a lot more years behind them than we have months.

Here is roughly how the field narrowed:

Proposals were judged on innovation, feasibility, scalability and impact. We did not have a long track record to lean on. What we had was a working product, people actually using it, and a very clear answer to the question every judge eventually asks: who is this for?

What "customer-centric" means when the customer just landed

Picture the person we build for. They have just stepped out of Bandaranaike International Airport. It is humid, their phone is on its last bar of battery, their local SIM is not working yet, and a very friendly man is offering them a ride to Colombo for a price they have no way of judging.

Almost every hard decision we have made comes back to that person. It is why OneCeylon is not a brochure. It is why SerendAI, our AI travel companion, is built to give a straight answer to a specific question, like whether a train to Ella runs on a Poya day or how much a tuk-tuk from Galle Fort to Unawatuna should really cost, instead of a paragraph of polite filler.

It is also why travellers can report the tuk-tuk fares they actually paid. That one feature says a lot about how we think. The most useful information about travelling in Sri Lanka does not live in a database somewhere. It lives with the last thousand people who did it, and our job is to collect that knowledge honestly and hand it to the next person arriving.

Customer-centric is not a slogan on a slide. It is a hundred small decisions made on behalf of someone who is tired, a long way from home, and trusting you to be right.

The numbers that got us into the room

Awards are nice. Usage is the thing we actually watch. In roughly three months since launch, this is where OneCeylon stands:

60K+
Travellers served
65
Countries they
came from
~3
Months since
launch

More than sixty thousand tourists, from sixty-five countries, have used OneCeylon to find their way around the island. That number is still climbing quickly, and very little of that growth came from advertising. It came from travellers telling other travellers, which is exactly the kind of growth a trust-based product needs.

Sixty-five countries also keeps us honest in a way a spreadsheet cannot. A backpacker from Germany, a family from India and a retired couple from Australia want very different things from the same beach. Building for all of them at once is humbling, and it is the best design education we could ask for.

How a small team ships like a big one

We are a young team in Colombo. We do not have a large engineering floor or a long list of departments. So people sometimes ask how a product this size came together this quickly, and held up under real traffic.

The honest answer is a few habits we refuse to drop, even when we are in a hurry.

None of that fits on a trophy. But we are fairly sure it is why there was one.

05

What changes now

Honestly? Not much, and we mean that as a good thing.

On Monday the same bugs will still need fixing and the same travellers will still be landing at the airport with questions. This notebook promised no roadmaps and we are keeping that promise. What the award gives us is not a new plan. It is a bit of confirmation that the plan we already had, building carefully for the person on the other end of the screen, is the right one.

Our thanks go to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority for creating a stage where young companies can stand next to established ones and be judged on the work. To the panel, for the hard questions. To the other winners, especially those we share this category with. And most of all to the sixty thousand-plus travellers who trusted a three-month-old platform with their holiday.

The line we put on the award poster says it better than we could here. This belongs to every traveller who believes in a better Sri Lanka.

We will get back to fixing things now.
